A Fresh Version

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, March 31, 2012

Hi everybody! First of all: thank you so much for all the amazing comments you guys left on my last post, my abstract '80s mani. I seriously didn't expect so much feedback, thank you! Also I received many requests for a tutorial and I wanted to let you know I'll happily work on it soon. :-)
I liked the '80s mani myself a lot too, plus it's fun to do, so I made another version. Same idea but in fresher colors. :-) The basecolor is the classic China Glaze For Audrey, I love this polish! (It combines so well with different colors.) I used Color Club Almost Famous for the yellow and the sheer blue is Color Club Chelsea Girl. I really like the bright color of Chelsea Girl, but was so disappointed when I found out how sheer it was (4-5 coats for opacity, if you don't use a white base). However, that sheerness has a purpose from now on. :D What do you think of this blue and yellow mani?

Essence Nail Art Twins - Chuck and Blair

Posted by Unknown

Good afternoon all - I hope you're having a better afternoon than I am, because it's snowing here! I've had enough snow. It makes me sad. Bring on the spring!
I'm counting down the days until I get to go on vacation and go to somewhere warm! (23 days!)

Until I get to go away and cheer myself up with some sun, I'll have to cheer myself up with polish. So here's another pretty swatch for you!

Essence Nail Art Twins - Chuck and Blair
Here's the second set of nail art twins I'm going to show you. I think this set might be my least favorite of the four sets I have. It's still great and love it, but the glitter just isn't as satisfying as the others! Haha.

Chuck and Blair are a couple from the book/TV series, Gossip Girl. I don't watch/read the series but I know who they are because I have some friends who are fans of the series.

Essence - Chuck
Chuck is a cool royal blue creme that has a bit of a dusty feel to it. The formula is great and you can almost get away with one coat but you'll wanna do two for a perfect finish.

Now for the glitter!

Essence - Blair
Blair is a silver glitter topcoat in a clear base. The silver is more of a gunmetal type color, it's darker than usual. There's a bunch of different sizes of the glitter and there's also some small holo glitter mixed in there.

On certain angles the glitter almost looks black, but if the light hits it, it starts shining.

This is a great set from Essence, as usual!

A Pink Snow Globe

Posted by Unknown

I finally caved and got a bottle of China Glaze Snow Globe when I saw it on clearance for $1.99. The swatch pictures had been oh so pretty. I topped it over China Glaze Something Sweet and Secondhand Silk for a simple manicure.
The colors of all the glitters are so pretty and pastel! It's really amazing how the colors can come out differently just depending on what you layer them over. :)

This is how I wore it. Most of my nails were painted with Something Sweet, but I had one accent nail per hand painted with Secondhand Silk. Then I layered 2 coats of Snow Globe over top.

piCture pOlish - Opulence Range

Posted by Unknown

I was so delighted when the girls at piCture pOlish emailed me and asked me to review their upcoming Opulence Range.  I'm not one to really hang out much on Facebook, in fact I don't even have a personal profile page, so I wasn't really in the loop about the shades until I got their email.  I quickly skedaddled myself over to Facebook to check out the shades and instantly got grabby hands.

Monroe is a blood red jelly polish with fine holographic particles scattered throughout.  I don't own any dark red jelly polishes like this so I think it's just the most lovely shade, and I love that it has the secret holo glow to make it more interesting.  The holo effect in this is subtle, but definitely there. What I love is that it doesn't dilute or 'silver-out' the blood red shade and make it pink.  Anyone that has attempted to make a red holo polish using spectraflair will know exactly what I mean - they always end up pink.

These photos of Monroe are taken in full sun and shows Munroe at three thin layers.

Peacock has emerald green hex glitter and silver rectangles all floating in a purple jelly base.  Looking at the bottle it just looks emerald green, it was only when I put it on my nail that I realized it was in a purple jelly base.  The glitter is quite dense and it is easy to get it opaque on it's own.  This is three coats of peacock topped with Ulta3 non chip and Seche Vite.  It did need two layers of top coat because, like 99% of fine glitter polishes (eg Nubar sparkles and Tony Moly Galaxy's) they dry to a rough finish.  Top coat really makes the glitter shine.

My photos are taken in the shade, because I find I get the best photos of glitter when there isn't all that light bouncing of the glitter particles.  But because of that, the green glitter in this polish looks washed out from the light reflection.  These photos make the glitter look teal coloured, but it really is emerald green, which you can see more in the top half of this picture.

This next photo is photo-shopped! I did this to show you what the green glitters actually look like.  See they are emerald, not aqua!

Next I tried layering peacock over a dark purple.  I chose piCture pOlish Aphrodisiac - which is a dark shimmery purple as the base.  One coat of Aphrodisiac and one coat of Peacock.  With the exception of the density of the glitter, it looks almost identical. Love this combo of green glitter with purple polish.

Here is a macro of peacock over aphrodisiac.

Mask-a-rade is a clear base with multi chromatic glitter hexes.  In fact it appears to be the identical multi chromatic glitters that are in the three Elytra polishes, but this polish has all three colours in the one bottle together!!  These photos are two coats of mask-a-rade over black creme, with a single coat of Seche Vite topcoat.

The three glitter types that appear to be in this polish are:
  • green, through aqua to blue, purple and pink (same as Elytra 528)
  • blue, through purple to orange and red (same as Elytra 529)
  • pink through orange and yellow (same as Elytra 530)

So not only is this a multi coloured glitter, it also shifts to a multitude of colours too.   If you can't decided which Elytra polish to get, then it's a no brainer, get Picture Polish's mask-a-rade.

Scrangie recently reviewed this collection and commented about them having a difficult formula.  Here's my comments on the formula.
  • Monroe - slightly on the thick side, but I didn't have any issues with it.  The brush is soft and smooth and the polish just flowed on for me, although I did need three coats for full colour coverage.
  • Peacock - this one is a little thick, but it actually reminds me of the same consistency of polish when I have frankened a glitter polish with lots of fine glitter.  Because I have made lots of polishes like that, I was 100% ok with the formula.  I just think the thickness is a by-product of a polish full of fine glitter.
  • Mask-a-rade - the formula was perfect, exactly like the Elytra polishes.
The Opulence range is available now on the Picture Polish website and they cost $13.50AUD a bottle.

Yeah, yeah, I know some of the ladies overseas are going to think that $13.50 is an expensive polish (even Scrangie commented about expecting better formula at $13.50 a bottle).  But what you have to remember is that nail polish is expensive here in Australia.  These polishes are cheaper than Revlon ($14.95), OPI ($19.95), Orly ($15.95) and don't mention Chanel ($39).  We pretty much only have one brand that is less than $3, which is Ulta3. Generally any polish under $10 is considered cheap, but between $10-$15 is a fairly standard price!

Plus it's Australian made.  That's a huge thing for me as an Aussie.  There isn't a lot of stuff that is manufactured in Australia these days,  it's all pretty much made in China.  I know that's not really important for international consumers, but for me, that is a big selling point and very much worth any extra dollars!

Bath & Body Works True Blue SPA Hand Cream

Posted by Unknown

I've been using this hand creme for about a month and a half now and I'm really pleased... It has parrafine in it which makes my hands real smooth... It is a little greasy, so I prefer to use it at night and wear cotton gloves before I go to bed. When I wake up, my hands feel soft. The smell is nice, too. The only downside is the price, but with that size, it looks like it is going to last over a year... :)

TGIF guys! Dustin and I are hard at work with You Mix and we hope to catch up soon on all the orders. Don't forget that the last day to get your order in and shipped before we move is Monday!!

My post today features a polish that I have had for about a year now and I am just now wearing it. haha I tried to wear it a few different times but never liked how it looked. As my painting skills have improved, this polish is finally getting some love! This is 2 coats below. I forgot how much I love a jelly finish...so shiny and squishy!

I added a coat of OPI Servin' Up Sparkle and then another thin layer of HWHAP over that.

So besides the OPI sorbets, what are your favorite jellies? I have decided that I need more in my life! Bonus points for someone that knows of a mint or turquoise one! :)

Nicole by OPI Four New Textures

Posted by Unknown

Today I have four new Texture polishes from Nicole by OPI to share with you guys. Textures are just like shatter polishes from OPI. When I saw the promo pictures for these I was really excited to see the glitter textures, as I am very curious in how the glitter crackle polishes will work. Well they didn't work much to my favor. Let's have a look.

Amethyst Texture is a purple glitter shatter. I did this over white hoping the purple glitters will show more, but it seems to me that the glitter are not dense enough, so the shatters look a bit sloppy.

Aquamarine Texture is a aqua blue glitter shatter. I did this over black since Amethyst Texture didn't look that great over white. The shatter is extremely hard to see. Once again I wish the glitters were more dense.

Quartz Texture is a metallic lilac shatter. I did it over black, and apparently my pointer and ring finger didn't shatter as much as the ring and the pinky. I think it was because I didn't wait for the polish to dry first.

Opal Texture is an iridescent opal shatter. I did it over black, and the opal turns out to be purple. Seems fun to play around with. But once again it doesn't look dense enough. At this point I was a little frustrated with the texture polishes so I also didn't wait long enough for the base polish to dry.

I did swatches on a nail wheel and they actually looked better on the nail wheel than it did on my own nails. Especially Opal Texture

Left to Right: Aquamarine Texture, Amethyst Texture, Quartz Texture, and Opal Texture.

I wasn't pleased with this collection. In the bottle they look amazing, but on the nail not really. Glitter shatters seems hard to master since glitters are not dense. Maybe these need to be extremely thick for the glitters to look good. I even tried doing two coats of each but it didn't even shatter, and just covered the entire nail. The only one I did like was Opal Texture. It will probably look good over white, and a dark purple polish.

Well that's all I have for today. What do you guys think of this collection? Will you buy it?

(These were sent to me for review)

31 Day Challenge - Day 17 - Glitter

Posted by Unknown

I can't help but think of fairies when I think of glitter. So I focused on the 3 fairy godmothers from Sleeping Beauty: Flora, Fauna, & Merryweather. I wanted them to be surrounded by a cloud of glitter and I hope I succeeded.
The background color is OPI Crown Me Already, then I painted them with acrylic paints. Once finished, I topped them all off with what else? China Glaze Fairy Dust!

In the sunlight they really sparkle!

Red is Flora

Green is Fauna

Blue is Merryweather

An intentionally blurry pic to show the glittery goodness.

And this is what they looked like before I topped it with Fairy Dust. Do you think it would have been better left alone? Or was the Fairy Dust a good move?

Next up is Half Moons! O.o

Lynnderella - Love, Lace and Lilacs

Posted by Unknown

Do you remember me telling you about my dark green franken that I called "Perfect green undies" which I wore under Lynnderella's Funny Money, Green of Hearts and I Can Afford It?  Have I told you yet that that polish and I are no longer on speaking terms!  That dirty hoe polish stained my lovely pinky coloured nails a horrible shade of yellow.  I didn't have stained nails at all, but after I took that polish off I was horrified.  I have a good basecoat on but I'm guessing my mix is just too pigmented!  It's really only the top half of my nails, and I've tried scrubbing the peroxide and baking powder but it hasn't made a difference.  Does anyone have whitening ideas that actually work??

I shared that story because you can see the yellow tinge to my nails in the shots of the very delicate and pretty Lynnderella Love, Lace and Lilacs.  Here I am wearing Nail Tek Foundation II base coat, two coats of Bourjois Rose Lounge (yes again, it's my go to sheer pink nude) and two coats of Love, Lace and Lilacs.  Rose Lounge on the base did a good job of hiding the yellow, but I can still see it.

I loved this look because it almost looked like it was LLL just on it's own, but Rose Lounge made it not look naked!

Love, Lace and Lilacs has various sized opaque white hexes and translucent white hexes, as well as opaque white bar glitter.  There is also a micro fine silver shimmer in this that is similar to the shimmer that is in Connect the Dots.

Taking inspiration from the polish name, I decided to wear this polish as a lace mani.

I started this mani with stamping a lace design across my nail.  Then I painted my index finger on both sides of the lace stamp with Love, Lace and Lilacs.  Then I did my middle finger on the bottom corner, and then as I twisted my hand around to do the top corner, I somehow painted the next finger.  Of course then I realised that I really loved just the half nail look, so I had to work out how to finish the design using some full lace and some half lace nails.  I totally loved this mani, I was so happy with the final look.  I can't believe how much like real lace this polish looks like.
