when you can't decide what to wear...

Posted by Unknown on Monday, June 18, 2012

When you can't decide what to wear... You keep layering.

And it doesn't always turn out fantastic. Here's an example of that.

Orly - Halley's Comet
One of my faves! Good start.

Color Club - Clean Break
Yes! White Crackle that works! All hail Color Club Crackle!!!

piCture pOlish - Peacock
...Not as I had hoped.
I thought the purple base and green glitter of peacock would create something magical over the blue and white base but really it just got kinda lost.

It's nice but not the best combo I've ever done.

I should have stopped with the white crackle because I loved this look! It kinda reminded me of icebergs floating in the ocean. And have I told you how much I love Color Club crackle polishes...?!

Did you guys notice that my watermark now proudly says rebeccalikesnails.com? I've finally made the jump to my own domain!
The whole blog should be transferred over within 3 days so if you have any issues with my blog right now, it's most likely due to this change. Please be patient. :)
I feel very official, owning my own .com site. Now all I need are business cards and I'll be a regular pro.

P.S. Have you entered my Zoya giveaway? Just 2 days left!

piCture pOlish - Denim

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, April 12, 2012

I don't like the word denim. Would you like to know why?
Every single time I try to type it, I write "demin" first. Demin. Every time.

Despite my demin problems, I adore this polish named Denim!

piCture pOlish - Denim
This cool blue polish is a super unique, super pretty shimmer shade with flakies!
I will warn you, my skin tone in these photos is laughable - I did a lot of swatching in the same day and I think by the end my camera just didn't want to see my fingers anymore.
The polish looks accurate in the photos so pay attention to that and not my skin!

This photo and the two that follow are more accurate to the true color of Denim. It's definitely a cool purple-toned blue.
The shimmer in the polish as you can see is bright and glowing, and then you've got the subtle flakies mixed in as well. It's awesome!

It shimmers like crazy and is super glossy on its own. It covers great in just 2 coats and the formula gives no issues.
I think one of the things piCture pOlish was going for with this shade was to make it a cool, comfortable shade that is not too distracting but still looks great - just like your favorite pair of jeans!

This polish delights me! If you're getting yourself some polishes from PP, this is a must-have.
I hope you enjoyed my pictures despite my weirdly colored skin. Haha!

Girls, I have got SO many swatches built up to show you! Maybe I'll do some spam posts with a bunch of polishes just to start clearing out my swatch folder.
I promise that once my semester is over, I'll have way more time for nail art!
My exams start on Saturday morning (yes, really, Saturday morning exam) and then end on the 20th.
I can't wait to be done with school until September! I'll have way more blog time. Gotta love summer break!

piCture pOlish - Honey Dew

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Hey everyone! I'm still having some internet issues so please forgive me if I'm posting sporadically!

Today I've got a quick-and-cute swatch to show you from piCture pOlish.
I won three of their polishes a while ago in a giveaway and never got around to showing them, so I'll be posting them this week.

piCture pOlish - Honey Dew
This is a light minty green creme polish, that is so bright and refreshing! This kind of color is just something I can always enjoy. It's a bit more vibrant than other mint colors I have in my collection.
It totally is "sweet 'n light, juicy 'n bright" as the bottle says.
The formula is a bit thin and you definitely need three coats for full coverage.

That's all for now - keep your eyes out for pictures of Denim and Antique soon!

piCture pOIish Opulence Range - Mask-A-Rade

Posted by Unknown on Monday, April 9, 2012

Good evening everyone! I meant to have this posted much earlier today but I've been having internet connection issues. I've been on the phone so much today trying to fix it and I even had to go get a new modem/router. Thankfully it seems to be working now and I can happily write this post for you guys.

Today I'll be showing you the third polish from piCture pOlish's Opulence Range.
I've previously shown you Monroe and Peacock which are fantastic. Is the third one fantastic, too?
YES.

piCture pOlish - Mask-A-Rade
This is a stunning multi-chromatic glitter polish. The base is clear and there are tons of different colors of multi-chromatic glitter in there! It's crazy actually how many colors are on your nail at once.

I took about a billion photos of this and I could only narrow it down to 12 pictures. Picspam time!

The bottle says "look beyond the sparkle." Beyond the sparkle? Sorry, no can do! When you're wearing this, you can't look at anything but the sparkle!

Look how amazing it looks when lit from different angles. All the glitter changes color and it's just gorgeous.

Look. At. All. The. Colors.

piCture pOlish - you've really worked your magic with this one.

I layered 2 coats of Mask-A-Rade over black for these photos. You definitely want two coats of the glitter to get a bunch of glitter on the nail. And of course the effect shows up more when layered over black or other dark colors.
I'm also wondering how this will look over white... I might try that soon!

Verdict: Too awesome for words.
You can purchase Mask-A-Rade here on piCture pOlish's website for $13.50 AUD.

This whole collection was so spectacular. If only all companies would really try so hard to make beautiful polishes! I'd rather a collection of 3 amazing polishes than 12 "meh" polishes.
Big thanks to The Girls at piCture pOlish for sending these to me, I will cherish them in my collection forever!

As I mentioned before, I have a few more PP swatches coming up for you this week to keep spreading the PP love.
Have a great day everyone! And let's hope for no more internet issues here at Chez Rebecca.

piCture pOlish Opulence Range - Peacock

Posted by Unknown on Sunday, April 8, 2012

It's no secret that I love peacock nails as well as Katy Perry's song Peacock. I've done peacock nails before, here and here. Of course making reference to the hilarious/awesome song.
So when I saw that piCture pOlish was making a Peacock polish - with a similar phrase on the bottle - I was so excited to get it. Check it out!

Peacock is a beautiful glitter polish with a sheer purple jelly base. There are a few different types of glitter in the mix and it's hard to see exactly what because all the glitters blend so well together.
There's small green hexes as well as very fine silver glitter and also some rectangular glitter!

I couldn't wait to get this baby on my nails. And it's beautiful, so I've got lots of photos!

piCture pOlish - Peacock
That's my favorite out of all the pictures I took. Definitely click on it to enlarge it! This polish is stunning and I am so glad to own it.
My swatches show 3 coats of Peacock which provides great coverage. The formula is dense but easy to work with.
I didn't find this too gritty - the jelly base helps tame the glitter - some pictures have topcoat and some don't.

This is such a good polish-interpretation of a peacock. I love how you can clearly see the green, blue and purple tones at the same time! The green glitter looks different shades of green and blue depending on how far down into the layers it is. Love it.

Not really sure what else to say about this because the photos speak for themselves!

Peacock retails for $13.50 AUD and you can get it here on the piCture pOlish website.
Tomorrow I'll be showing you the third polish from the Opulence Range and that one is a stunner too! Keep your eyes peeled for that one!

piCture pOlish Opulence Range - Monroe

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, April 7, 2012

Hey everyone! I've got some great polishes to show you guys from piCture pOlish!
They so kindly sent me their brand new Opulence Range for review and I have a few other swatches coming up soon as well.

I'm going to start today with Monroe - a rich blood red jelly with holographic pigment in it!

piCture pOlish - Monroe
Like my fancy photo? Ha! I have a print of Marilyn Monroe in my bathroom so I figured it would make a nice backdrop for a photo of Monroe. A classic Hollywood icon, just as the bottle says!

This is probably the most beautiful shade of red that I've ever had on my nails. I put it on, with the intention of taking it off right away to swatch the others, but I ended up wearing it for a few hours because I just loved it!
My mom agreed, the deep red shade was very flattering on my skin which I usually find too pale for reds.

I adore the color! It's so weird for me to love a red but hey, this one is a beauty!
It takes three coats to get to this rich color but if you want it a little lighter, you can stop at 2 coats.

Here's an overexposed sunlight photo to show more of the holographic pigment.
There's no chunky glitter in the polish, just pigment, so the finish is perfectly smooth and glossy.

If you're looking for the perfect blood red shade, and you like your polishes with a bit o' sparkle, this is the one, ladies!

You can purchase Monroe from piCture pOlish's website by clicking here! It retails for $13.50 AUD.
Stay tuned in the next few days to see swatches of more great polishes from PP.
While you're waiting, check them out on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Dare I say I'll be wearing this again soon? A red? I'm going crazy! (I still refuse to like orange.)

(WHY is the text at the end of my posts different from the rest?! 2 days in a row! It won't change, either!)

Product sent for honest review.

piCture pOlish - Opulence Range

Posted by Unknown on Saturday, March 31, 2012

I was so delighted when the girls at piCture pOlish emailed me and asked me to review their upcoming Opulence Range.  I'm not one to really hang out much on Facebook, in fact I don't even have a personal profile page, so I wasn't really in the loop about the shades until I got their email.  I quickly skedaddled myself over to Facebook to check out the shades and instantly got grabby hands.

Monroe is a blood red jelly polish with fine holographic particles scattered throughout.  I don't own any dark red jelly polishes like this so I think it's just the most lovely shade, and I love that it has the secret holo glow to make it more interesting.  The holo effect in this is subtle, but definitely there. What I love is that it doesn't dilute or 'silver-out' the blood red shade and make it pink.  Anyone that has attempted to make a red holo polish using spectraflair will know exactly what I mean - they always end up pink.

These photos of Monroe are taken in full sun and shows Munroe at three thin layers.

Peacock has emerald green hex glitter and silver rectangles all floating in a purple jelly base.  Looking at the bottle it just looks emerald green, it was only when I put it on my nail that I realized it was in a purple jelly base.  The glitter is quite dense and it is easy to get it opaque on it's own.  This is three coats of peacock topped with Ulta3 non chip and Seche Vite.  It did need two layers of top coat because, like 99% of fine glitter polishes (eg Nubar sparkles and Tony Moly Galaxy's) they dry to a rough finish.  Top coat really makes the glitter shine.

My photos are taken in the shade, because I find I get the best photos of glitter when there isn't all that light bouncing of the glitter particles.  But because of that, the green glitter in this polish looks washed out from the light reflection.  These photos make the glitter look teal coloured, but it really is emerald green, which you can see more in the top half of this picture.

This next photo is photo-shopped! I did this to show you what the green glitters actually look like.  See they are emerald, not aqua!

Next I tried layering peacock over a dark purple.  I chose piCture pOlish Aphrodisiac - which is a dark shimmery purple as the base.  One coat of Aphrodisiac and one coat of Peacock.  With the exception of the density of the glitter, it looks almost identical. Love this combo of green glitter with purple polish.

Here is a macro of peacock over aphrodisiac.

Mask-a-rade is a clear base with multi chromatic glitter hexes.  In fact it appears to be the identical multi chromatic glitters that are in the three Elytra polishes, but this polish has all three colours in the one bottle together!!  These photos are two coats of mask-a-rade over black creme, with a single coat of Seche Vite topcoat.

The three glitter types that appear to be in this polish are:
  • green, through aqua to blue, purple and pink (same as Elytra 528)
  • blue, through purple to orange and red (same as Elytra 529)
  • pink through orange and yellow (same as Elytra 530)

So not only is this a multi coloured glitter, it also shifts to a multitude of colours too.   If you can't decided which Elytra polish to get, then it's a no brainer, get Picture Polish's mask-a-rade.

Scrangie recently reviewed this collection and commented about them having a difficult formula.  Here's my comments on the formula.
  • Monroe - slightly on the thick side, but I didn't have any issues with it.  The brush is soft and smooth and the polish just flowed on for me, although I did need three coats for full colour coverage.
  • Peacock - this one is a little thick, but it actually reminds me of the same consistency of polish when I have frankened a glitter polish with lots of fine glitter.  Because I have made lots of polishes like that, I was 100% ok with the formula.  I just think the thickness is a by-product of a polish full of fine glitter.
  • Mask-a-rade - the formula was perfect, exactly like the Elytra polishes.
The Opulence range is available now on the Picture Polish website and they cost $13.50AUD a bottle.

Yeah, yeah, I know some of the ladies overseas are going to think that $13.50 is an expensive polish (even Scrangie commented about expecting better formula at $13.50 a bottle).  But what you have to remember is that nail polish is expensive here in Australia.  These polishes are cheaper than Revlon ($14.95), OPI ($19.95), Orly ($15.95) and don't mention Chanel ($39).  We pretty much only have one brand that is less than $3, which is Ulta3. Generally any polish under $10 is considered cheap, but between $10-$15 is a fairly standard price!

Plus it's Australian made.  That's a huge thing for me as an Aussie.  There isn't a lot of stuff that is manufactured in Australia these days,  it's all pretty much made in China.  I know that's not really important for international consumers, but for me, that is a big selling point and very much worth any extra dollars!
