OPI's Day of Shatter! Featuring Turquoise Shatter!

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Good morning! Did you know that today is Day of Shatter, according to OPI?
They made an event on Facebook and everything, which you can see here.

I decided last-minute last night to participate. I thought it might be a good time to show you Turquoise Shatter.
I bought it recently (at full price, yuck) because obviously I need anything turquoise.
However, this is a very blue shade of turquoise, I'm not sure I would have called it turquoise.
For example, here is Turquoise Shatter next to Sally Hansen Blue Calypso.

It's pretty blue.

Here it is in front of my turquoise wheel. As you can see, it falls on the blue side of the wheel, but it still qualifies.

Anyway.
A lot of people have issues with shatter polishes but I was not one of them, until now.
This one just does not want to satisfy me!
I have tried twice on my nails now, and once on a wheel. I'll show you all my attempts.

First I used it over one of my favorite pink polishes, Essie's Jamaica Me Crazy. This was my first Essie! It was part of the retail-exclusive display.

Beautiful pink foil-y shimmer, opaque in 2 coats.
I let it dry completely. Like an hour. (I wasn't in a hurry.)

...And that is what I got. After doing the middle and ring finger normally and not getting good results, I tried horizontal on the pinky. Nope. And I tried small strokes on the index finger. Nope.

On the thumb I also tried short strokes and it was a total mess.
It's okay but it doesn't meet my standard for shatter!
Despite the disappointing shatter effect, the color is awesome and looks even better with topcoat!

Soooo shimmery and pretty. I want this exact color/finish in a normal polish!

After this, I decided to try it on a wheel. I also wanted to swatch it over black and white to see what it looked like. So I tried that.

...Um, WHAT?
It was worse!
The white nail is okay, but what the heck happened on the black nail?!

So last night I decided to make a second attempt on my nails.
I thought for a few minutes on what color to use underneath. And then I figured it out.
Frolic!
Yes, the same polish, three manis in a row.
That, my friends, is a first for Rebecca Likes Nails. (I guess it proves how in love I am with Frolic!)

My right hand was already just solid Frolic with Seche Vite on top, long dried. I tried shattering those first, because some people say it works better over SV.
...Nope. That was the worst of all. Very tiny cracks. Not pretty. (My cuticles on that hand are so bad, I can't bare to show you a photo. But trust me, it was bad.)
Then I started with a fresh coat of Frolic on my left hand. And I added some thinner to my Turquoise Shatter.

I love the colors and the look, but I wanted better shattering!
I applied normally on all fingers, but on the thumb I did multiple small strokes. That gave the best result! Next time I will do that all over.

Some people go against directions and say shatter works better over slightly tacky polish.
My pinky finger was slightly tacky when I applied the shatter. The results on my pinky don't seem to be different than the other nails.

Enlarge that last photo to see how gorgeous the Turquoise is!
I love the color so much, I can forgive the poor shattering.
(Plus, this way, I get to see more pretty turquoise!)

Are you ladies (and gentlemen?) wearing shatter on Day of Shatter?
