Dating a laser mani

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Hi guys! For this post I have a laser mani to show you. I used yesterday's mani for it, OPI Dating A Royal. And on top of it I used China Glaze Jitterbug, a stunning must-have polish, in my humble opinion. It has a dark grey base with a foil-like shimmer finish, which looks edgy on its own, but matches any other color as well. I like it a lot :) To make the laser pattern show up better I added a matt topcoat afterwards, the one I use is from Essence.

If you like to do this look yourself, just have a look at the tutorial. It's quite simple and a fun way to combine different colors or finishes. Thanks for reading!

Comeback of the laser mani

Posted by Unknown on Friday, May 13, 2011

Hi guys, it's been a while since I did my last laser mani. Guess its moment got stolen by the mummy and the lightning bolt design, haha. Anyway, it was great to do this design again. It's probably my favorite tape pattern, because it's so simple and easy to achieve. Today I used OPI Big Apple Red for my base color and China Glaze For Audrey on top of it. Everytime I use For Audrey as top color, it amazes me how opaque it is. Because it's a pretty light color, you'd think it could be sheer, but as you can see it prefectly covered Big Apple Red. The color combination of the red and turquoise blue is pretty odd, yet I'm very attracted to it. I don't know why, but it just works.

So if you feel like doing a laser mani yourself after reading this post, just check out the tutorial if you haven't already, it might be useful ;) Cheers!

That's one crazy mani...

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, May 5, 2011

Okay, guys, I have no idea what I was trying to do here... Just experimenting a bit and this is what came out. I really don't know what to think of it, so I'll just let you decide, haha :)
Polishes I used are Color Club Almost Famous, Barry M Cobalt Blue and three China Glaze polishes: Lemon Fizz, Four Leaf Clover and Designer Satin.
So guys, what will it be, hot or not?

Holographic laser mani

Posted by Unknown on Monday, March 21, 2011

Hi guys, right now you're looking at a new version of my laser mani. Holographic polishes are just perfect for tape manis. Though they don't always cover in one coat, they sure dry fast. The one I used is Gosh Holographic, it was opaque in two coats and ready to be taped in approximately 5 minutes. On top I used a beautiful purple shimmer from Art de Lautrec, #34 which is a lot less blue in real life. Unfortunately the shimmer isn't visible on the pictures and I didn't use topcoat because that would take away the holographic finish.
I'm loving the final look, holographic polishes are such an easy way to make the whole more interesting, so definitely recommended (for tape manis).
Have a nice day!

Tutorial: laser design tape mani

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, March 17, 2011

This blog was made to share naildesigns so today I want to show you how I make a laser tape mani with one layering color.

First apply the basecoat and after that your base color, this will be the color of the crossing laserbeams. Try to use onecoaters if you have the choice, because those dry faster so it will save you a lot of time. Let the base color dry for 2-3 minutes. If using a polish that requires two or more coats, apply a fastdrying topcoat like Seche Vite and wait for 10 minutes to let it dry.

Then take a little piece of tape and cut it in thin strips lengthwise. The strips don't have to be evenly big, different sized strips make the design playful. But if you really want them to be even, you can use the thickness of your scissorblades as a standard.
Place the strips on the nail so that they cross each other. Fingers will do with that, but you'll work more precisely with tweezers. Important is to remember the order in which you place the tape, so you won't smudge your design while removing the tape because they're overlapping. I always start with the (more or less) horizantal strips and then the vertical ones, or the other way around.
Before you apply the layering color, make sure the tape is stuck well on the nail, it tends to get off around the edges. Now apply your top color and remove the tape as soon as you're finished with that. Do the last two actions on one nail at a time, because if you let the polish dry too long, it will stick to the tape and your lines won't be so crisp.
Tada, you're laser mani is born!
Don't forget clean-up and topcoat :)

Finally some useful tips:

  • For my tape manis, all I use is regular stationery tape. But you might prefer something else, so just experiment with different sorts of tape to figure out what works best for you.
  • For your base color you can use any polish you like, however one-coaters will allow you to place the tape much sooner because those are usually fast drying. Of course you can also quicken the drying of polishes that require several coats to cover, by applying a fast drying topcoat. (I use Seche Vite).
  • Your layering color(s) can be either a one- or two-coater. Because you've already applied a base color, most polishes that usually take two coats to cover now will do with one.
  • Though I mention cutting the tape strips as step 2, I admit it is safer to cut before applying the base color. However, if you've learned how to cut the tape without having it touch your polished nails, it can save you a lot of time.
  • You might want to leave the cut strips somewhere else than the edge of your desk/table, to prevent them from getting stuck to the surface while you're busy. You do not want to have to peel them off with your freshly painted claws!
  • Apply your top color in one thin (but opaque) coat, this will create crisper lines.
  • When you're removing the tape strips, try to remove them individually, if you can, because most of the time your design will come out neater this way
  • Using tweezers to remove the tape strips can prevent your freshly painted nails from getting smudged.
  • It's not always necessary to start all over if you've messed up your design, often a little touch-up with a nailart brush can solve the problem.
  • If you want to use a matte topcoat, use a regular one underneath. My experience with matte topcoats is that they smudge the design very easily, even when it's completely dry. Applying a normal topcoat first will prevent that.
  • Moisterize your cuticles afterwards, because the tape can really dry out your skin!
  • You can practice this tutorial on your old mani that you applied a day (or more) before. If you succeed, you've got yourself a fresh mani, otherwise you were going to remove it anyway!
  • If you feel like this design is too time-consuming for a full mani, you can also use it for an accent nail (or two).
  • Have fun and practice makes perfect ;)

I would absolutely love to see your attempt on my design, so feel free to leave a link to your creation in the comment section!

    Katy Perry mani

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Yesterday I went to the Katy Perry concert in Amsterdam, which was awesome and so in the style of KP. The air was filled with a sweet candy scent, the stage was turned into a colorful (cotton) candyland and her outfits were an explosion of color and LOTS of glitter. I even caught myself fantasizing about having her glitteroutfits on my nails, lol. I actually am a huge glitter lover, though you wouldn't say so with not having done a single glittermani so far. But I will, promise :) To the mani!
For the concert I already knew what outfit I wanted to wear, it was a creme white tube dress with different colored hearts from Miss Selfridge (see last picture). I wanted a stunning mani to match the dress so I chose for a tape mani in the sort of same colors as the dress, and this is what I came up with:

Polishes I used: the grey is from Miss Sporty, the dark purple from Hema and the blue and pink named Turquoise Kitty and Kitty Queen are both from H&M. Kitty Queen is also the pink I used for the Extravagant checkers. The white base color is Essence's Stamp me! White.

    Thanks for stopping by!

    Spotlights mani

Posted by Unknown on Tuesday, March 15, 2011

The other day I had a 'laserbeams'-mani, today I have a metallic version but with gold 'beams'. So I asked my boyfriend what he would call this look and he came up with: the spotlights mani! And I can't think of anything better than that, it really does look like golden spotlights beaming through a bright blue night sky.
This is another tape mani, I think it will take a long, long time before those will bore me, lol. The gold you see is China Glaze 2030, my favorite gold next to Midnight Kiss. 2030 is perfect for tape manis like this one, because it's opaque in one coat and it dries so fast! That means you only have to wait 2-3 minutes before you can place the tape on top. The blue is a namesless polish from a brand called KBY,  this is also the blue I used for the futuristic French. Because I like the not so glossy finish of the metallics, I didn't use topcoat.
I'm really digging these tape manis, they're so simple, fun enough for a party and if using one-coaters (which usually are fast drying), shouldn't take that much longer than a regular mani. So if you like this look, you should definitely try it sometime :) That's all, folks!

    Laser mani

Posted by Unknown on Thursday, March 10, 2011

Laserbeams! That was the first thing that crossed my mind after I removed my tape and saw the pink lines cutting into the blue. This mani looks very '80s with the abstract pattern and the bold colors. The pictures aren't very color accurate though. Both colors are much brighter in real life, especially the neon pink is a lot pinker, like a highlight marker.
I was satisfied with the blue and pink, but the glossy finish of the topcoat really just distracted from the whole laser-look. So I mattified it with Essence Matt topcoat, which I think brings out the cross patterns much better. The pink neon is Warhol from Color Club, the blue is Essence's Caribbean Sea from the Show Your Feet-collection. Caribbean Sea is a nice aqua blue shimmer and it covers in one or two coats, but it stains so, so bad... Don't forget that basecoat, folks!
    Thanks for reading :)

    Rock on

Posted by Unknown on Sunday, March 6, 2011

Hello everybody, for today a silver mani.
I'm really loving this edgy mani, I like the grungy look to it. I used Millenium for the stripes and the background color is a dark silver foil from Hema, a local store.
This is another tape mani and it was supposed to be a regular triangle mani like I did before. But as I was taping my first hand in the usual, same pattern, I thought it would look cooler if I just placed the tape randomly on the nails. The result is visible on my right hand in the picture below. I like it a lot more than my left, it's more dynamic, not so predictable. Do you like this rockin' mani as much as I do?
